The timeless beauty and versatility of natural stone in modern design
Welcome to Stone Matters, it’s our newsletter where we share updates, trends, and valuable insights with you. This month we’re exploring the enduring popularity of natural stone in design, focusing on our most popular natural stone, quartzite.
Quartzite is one of the most durable natural stones, primarily composed of silica, which gives it exceptional hardness and resistance to abrasion. It is largely sourced from Brazil, known for world-renowned varieties such as:
- Taj Mahal
- Mont Blanc
- White Macaubas
- Azul Macaubas

India is also a significant exporter, with common varieties including Silver Grey, Green, and Yellow Quartzite. Australia has recently introduced its own high-quality quartzites, quarried in the Pilbara region of WA, including:
- Austral Dream
- Pilbara Red
While quartzite is highly resistant to heat and etching, it can be porous and prone to water absorption if not properly sealed. To prevent water spots and staining, it should be sealed on installation and re-sealed periodically throughout its lifetime.

Expert tip:
When planning your project…
Natural stone should be one of the first materials you select. Unlike other finishes such as joinery, tapware, or paint—which are typically available in standard, consistent colours—natural stone is unique by nature, with variations in colour, veining, and pattern from batch to batch.
Because of this individuality, it’s far easier to coordinate other finishes around your chosen stone than to try and find a stone that matches pre-selected materials.
We recommend beginning your stone selection process 4–6 months in advance.
This gives you the opportunity to either secure a piece from existing stock or allow time for new shipments arriving from overseas—ensuring you don’t have to compromise on the look you truly want.
Explore our diverse stone selection — perfect for every design vision. Our recommended suppliers are CDK Stone, Avant Stone and CavArt.
